Let me share a personal story to illustrate this point. Some time ago (probably about 20 years now!), I was a single mom juggling a full-time job, raising kids, and dealing with life’s curveballs. My mom, who had come to visit, pointed out that our golden retriever, Sunny, wasn’t getting enough exercise. 

 

In the midst of my busy life, I decided to take Sunny for a hike, hoping it would address my mom’s concern and give me a much-needed break.

 

As I walked through the beautiful trail, I felt an overwhelming sense of peace and joy. But when I returned home, my mom was upset because she couldn’t reach me. 

 

I snapped, expressing how nothing I did ever seemed to satisfy her expectations. This was a turning point for me. It was the first time I set a boundary by saying no to the constant need to please others. 

 

That moment of honesty shifted our relationship for the better and helped me realize that I didn’t have to sacrifice my own well-being for others’ approval.
