How to Find Balance Between Being Healthier and Having Fun

balance health habits mindset small steps summer wellness tips

Hello there and welcome to today's Wellbeing Wednesday!

I'm Karin, your Health Coach and bounce-back expert, here to help breast cancer survivors like you adopt habits that withstand the roller coaster of life, recovery, fatigue, stress, and yes, even chocolate cravings.

Today, we're diving into a topic I hear about from so many of you: finding the balance between being healthier and having fun, especially as we come up on summer.

Embracing Summer and Balance

Summer is the perfect season for a little rejuvenation, renewal, and relaxation. For breast cancer survivors, this time of year can hold even more significance as it provides an opportunity to focus on holistic well-being – mind, body, and spirit. It’s common to hear people say, "I'll pick it back up in September," but what if you could enjoy your summer without compromising your health goals? That's what we're talking about today.

Why Balance Matters

When we think of balance, we often picture those old-fashioned scales, perfectly aligned. But in my 58 years, I’ve learned that perfection is rarely attainable. Instead, I've adopted the concept of rhythmit allows us to ebb and flow with life, with our recovery, energy levels, and bandwidth. By finding our rhythm, we can avoid the exhausting cycle of starting from scratch and reduce the nagging fear of recurrence.

Fear Hates Action

As a breast cancer survivor and someone carrying the BRCA2 genetic mutation, I live with a high risk of recurrence. Taking action is my way of managing that fear, and it’s a powerful tool for all of us. When we're active – whether it's going for a walk, eating healthy, managing stress, or getting enough sleep – that nagging voice in our head gets quieter.

Common Myths and Mindset Shifts

Let's debunk some common myths that might be holding you back:

  1. You Can't Teach an Old Dog New Tricks: It's never too late to learn and grow. Small, manageable changes can significantly enhance your well-being, no matter your age or stage of life.

  1. I'm Not Doing Enough: Progress, not perfection, is the key to success. Small steps, taken consistently, make a big difference over time. For example, drinking a glass of water every morning can have a profound impact on your health.

  1. I Can't Change Everything, So Why Bother?: Every small change makes a difference. Studies have shown that even a week of eating organic food can significantly reduce pesticide levels in the body. Focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t.
